This entry represents a repeated B region domain found in the collagen-binding surface protein Cna in Staphylococcus aureus, which has a prealbumin-like beta-sandwich fold of seven strands in two sheets with a Greek key topology [PubMed10673425]. However, this domain does not mediate collagen binding, the region carries out that function; instead it appears to form a stalk that presents the ligand binding domain away from the bacterial cell surface. Cna is a collagen-binding MSCRAMM (Microbial Surface Component Recognizing Adhesive Matrix Molecules), and is necessary and sufficient for S. aureus cells to adhere to cartilage.

Other proteins contain domains with a similar fold, although they can have an additional 1-2 strands. Such proteins include the C-terminal domain of the beta subunit of transhydroxylase, a molybdenum-containing enzyme from Pelobacter acidigallici that catalyses the conversion of pyrogallol to phoroglucinol, an important building block of plant polymers [PubMed15284442].

Browse genome assignments for this superfamily. The SUPERFAMILY hidden Markov model library has been used to carry out SCOP domain assignments to all genomes at the superfamily level.

Alignments of sequences to 3 models in this superfamily are available by clicking on the 'Alignments' icon above. PDB sequences less than 40% identical are shown by default, but any other sequence(s) may be aligned. Select PDB sequences, genome sequences, or paste in or upload your own sequences.

Browse and view proteins in genomes which have different domain combinations including a Cna protein B-type domain domain.

Examine the distribution of domain superfamilies, or families, across the major taxonomic kingdoms or genomes within a kingdom. This gives an immediate impression of how superfamilies, or families, are restricted to certain kingdoms of life.

Explore domain occurrence network where nodes represent genomes and edges are domain architectures (shared between genomes) containing the superfamily of interest.

There are 3 hidden Markov models representing the Cna protein B-type domain superfamily. Information on how the models are built, and plots showing hydrophobicity, match emmission probabilities and insertion/deletion probabilities can be inspected.
